My name is Scott Rench. I’m an artist. Where I express my art depends on which computer I’m sitting in front of.

During the day I work as an art director in the world of Chicago advertising. I use my computer to create interactive experiences and integrated marketing campaigns for myriad clients and products.

At night, finally at home after an honest day’s toil, it is not long before I find myself in front of the computer yet again. There, I manipulate, illustrate and compose digital elements for the purpose of creating new modes of expression in the ceramic arts.

I can no longer keep my ad work and my artwork from influencing each other. Two aspects of the same brain trying to make the world a slightly cooler place one creative project at a time. Contained within this virtual space are examples of my endeavors.

In grad school getting my MFA in Ceramics, I met a graphic designer named Larry Geiger who showed me this program called Photoshop.

Completely enthralled by all the things he could do, I began to see the computer in a completely different light. That Christmas break, the chair of the art department gave me his building key. But instead of logging studio time, I snuck into the computer lab and spent the next 30 days glued to the screen. 15 hours+ each day teaching myself a suite of programs, interrupted by periodic cans of Mountain Dew. That month was perhaps the most enlightening, frustrating, masochistic month of my life.

When I was a kid, I woke up one day and decided I wanted to run a race.

As fate would have it, there was a 10k soon to take place in my neighborhood. I had never run a race in my entire life, but I took the flyer home and showed it to my parents. Their response was a combination of laughter and more laughter. So the day of the race I got up early in the morning, left the house before anyone knew it, and I ran. I came in first in my age group.

One day I woke up and decided I wanted to be in advertising.

My first brush with PR came when I took the initiative to call the local newspaper.

I told them I was staging an event and demanded they come out to cover it. To my suprise, it worked. The next day, my picture was in the paper, pushing a makeshift Frankenstein’s monster on a sled through my snow-swept backyard. I was seven.

I guess some people are born to self-promote.
